¡Hola amigos!
I'm back from Mexico, where we had a string of really nice concerts
these past few weeks. First I went down to Guadalajara to hear
Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán (with the Jalisco Symphony) playing a new
popurrí I wrote for them called "Las voces de Fuentes", based on 5
huapangos by Ruben Fuentes. It sounded great, too -- you have no idea
how amazing it is to hear the best mariachi in the world playing
something you wrote. And here's the really crazy thing: they invited
me to sit in with them while I was there! So for 4 days I pretended to
be a "member" of Vargas -- I played with them on all of their
performances for those 4 days, in the Teatro Degollado, backing up
Fernando de la Mora, in the mariachi parade, in the outdoor concert
opening the mariachi festival, everything. People kept asking "are you
the new member of Mariachi Vargas??" and I had to say "no, I'm just
sitting in for a few days", but it sure was fun. Check out the
pictures below.
Next I went to Aguascalientes where I conducted their symphony (GREAT
orchestra), performing some of my compositions, a lot of my
arrangements, and also some of the greatest Mexican classical pieces
(Revueltas, Moncayo, Galindo, Marquez). We had a great time, the
audiences were incredible! Monica came with me, plus 3 of my guitar
players (Rafa, Chino, Chi Chí) and we were joined by Jorge Lopez Yañez.
Really outstanding concerts. Again, pictures below....
Up next: October 7 in San Bernardino. I'll be conducting the La Jolla
Symphony once again for Sinfonia Mexicana, an incredible evening of
Mexican classical music including the Huapango de Moncayo, Danzón #2 by
Marquez, 3 of my "Al aire libre" songs, a suite of songs by Jose
Alfredo Jimenez, I'll play "Nereidas" (a COOL trumpet solo!), plus some
of the most famous opera arias in the world (Carmen, Con Te Partiro,
and others). Monica Abrego, Jose Medina and Jorge Lopez Yañez will be
singing ("2 Tenors and a Soprano"), accompanied by the almost 80-piece
orchestra and 3 mariachi guitars. If you're not too far away, don't
miss it. Click here for info and tickets: http://SinfoniaMexicana.com
That's it for now. Hope you're having a great autumn. See you later,
-Jeff
P.S. unfortunately, the La Jolla concert Sept. 30 that I mentioned to
you before has been cancelled -- come to San Bernardino! :-)
